Oriental rugs can hold several pounds of dirt. Wool fibers under a microscope are very jagged. This jagged shape helps trap dirt and makes vacuuming less effective. This dirt also can be very damaging to the fibers of the rug. Dirt can act like little knives and actually cut the fibers. This can reduce the life span of your expensive oriental rugs.
